Magic: The Gathering – What do I need to start?

I am starting to get into Magic and had some questions before I head to my local game place to actually try to play.

I have a deck all set to go, but I was wondering are there items other than cards that are necessary to play? I know there are Spin Down Dice for health tracking, but what do people usually use for +1/+1 or -1/-1 counter tokens or similar things?

I have some Pokemon cards and they came with a coin and some health/effect tokens. Are there similar things for Magic?

Yea most people use a 20 sided dice to keep track of their life points, But If you have lifegain in your deck I’d bring more 20 sided or two 8 sided dice, it’s up to you. Some people also like to use paper and pencil to keep track of life totals. This is a good way to keep track of your opponents life points as well just in case they decide to cheat or are bad at math.

For counters, I use tiny six sided dice because I’m using allies and it takes a lot of counters to keep track of them. So it works well. But you can use anything for counters really. Even the colored gems they use in pokemon. Some people even use coins. As long as it works and you announce it, it should be fine.

people probably would use some sort of thing like that i never did though i’m pretty good at keeping track of things in my head.

You do not need a life die or any official tokens. I know there are people who use papers. I tend to use dice to keep track of my counters/tokens. As long as you have a system for managing it, it doesn’t matter what it is.

i use a white 6 sided die for +1 counters and a red one for – 1 counters but i seen people use balls of paper too its all personal choice
